Privacy policy.

New Jersey Homicide Investigators Association, Inc. (“NJHIA,” “we”) operates njhia.org for the benefit of its members and the law enforcement community. This policy explains what information we collect, why, how we keep it safe, and what choices you have.

1 · What we collect

We only collect what we need to operate the association, process payments, and respond to you. Specifically:

  • Membership applications: name, email, phone, agency, rank, supervisor name + email, optional notes.
  • Event registrations: name, email, agency, rank, dietary / accessibility needs.
  • Donations: name, email, billing address (handled by Stripe — we do not see card numbers).
  • Store orders: name, email, shipping address (handled by Stripe at checkout).
  • Contact form: name, email, agency, message.
  • Server logs: standard request logs (IP address, user agent, timestamp) retained for security and abuse prevention.
  • Analytics:aggregated, non-identifying page-view data via Google Tag Manager / Google Analytics. You can opt out via your browser's Do Not Track setting or an analytics-blocking extension.

2 · How we use it

  • To process membership applications, event registrations, donations, and store orders.
  • To send you receipts, confirmations, and (rarely) operational updates about something you signed up for.
  • To verify eligibility for the law-enforcement-only programs we run.
  • To comply with our obligations under 501(c)(3) nonprofit law (donation records).
  • To improve the website and detect abuse.

We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information. We do not use it for advertising. We do not share it with third parties except the service providers listed below.

3 · Service providers we use

4 · Cookies

We use a small number of strictly-necessary cookies for authentication (member / admin login) and cart functionality (the store). Analytics cookies are loaded only via Google Tag Manager and can be blocked at the browser level without breaking the site.

5 · How we secure your information

  • HTTPS / TLS on every page; HSTS in production.
  • Secrets and database credentials are server-side only and never exposed to the browser.
  • Row-level security policies in the database — public reads are scoped, writes go through trusted server routes.
  • Membership and donation records are immutable post-creation; corrections happen via reversal entries, not edits.

6 · Data retention

  • Membership records: kept for the life of the membership and seven (7) years after termination, per nonprofit recordkeeping practice.
  • Donation records: kept for at least seven (7) years to satisfy IRS substantiation rules.
  • Event registrations: kept for at least three (3) years for CEU verification.
  • Contact-form submissions: kept for up to one (1) year, or longer if part of an active conversation.
  • Server logs: rotated within 90 days.

7 · Your rights

You can ask us to access, correct, or delete the personal information we hold about you. Some records (donations, registrations) we're required to retain for legal/tax reasons even after you ask — in those cases we'll anonymize what we can and explain what we can't.

8 · Children

The site is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has submitted information through the site, contact us immediately.

9 · Changes

If we update this policy materially, we'll change the “Last updated” date at the top and post the revised version here. Continued use of the site after changes means you accept the updated policy.
